Nurturing the dreams of the next generation
By proactively contributing to society through a wide range of education activities, Honda strives to nurture the challenging spirit in young people across the Asia-Oceania region so that they too can follow their dreams and bring benefits to society. From scholarships for disadvantaged students and support for technical training institutes to robot building, inventing and sports which develop students' team spirit, Honda companies across the region are helping the young to realize the power of dreams.
Scholarships for ASEAN young leaders
Since 1985 the Honda-sponsored IATSS Forum has been offering promising young leaders from ASEAN countries the opportunity to research and study topics relating to Japanese culture and contemporary society. To date more than 600 ASEAN citizens have received IATSS scholarships, which typically provide a two-month stay in Japan. In FY2007, 34 participants representing nine ASEAN countries attended the 39th and 40th IATSS Forums.
India: Candidates engaged in hands on practice session at the sewing tailoring workshop
In order to help local rural people, especially women, Hero Honda has set up a Vocational Training Centre. So far 26 batches comprising of nearly 625 women have been trained in tailoring, embroidery and knitting. The Company has helped women trained at this center to set up a production unit to stitch uniforms for Hero Honda employees. Interestingly, most of the women are now self-employed.

India: YES Award india
With support from Honda Motor India Pvt Ltd. and the Indian Institutes of Technology, in 2007 the Honda Foundation launched the Honda Young Engineer and Scientist's Award (YES Award)in India. The YES Awards are intended to recognize outstanding students who will become trailblazers in ecotechnology. All recipients will be eligible for additional funds to continue their research as professional interns or graduate students in Japan.

Honda's giant, joint-venture motorcycle company in Indonesia has been contributing to various educational initiatives for many tears. Since 1996 it has been awarding annual scholarships to some 500 local community students, from elementary to high school level.
To celebrate the opening of its third manufacturing plant in 2005, the company donated 322 engines to 161 state technical high schools across Indonesia for training purposes. The company also organizes an annual Honda Best Student programme working with schools, students and motorcycle dealers. The students are required to submit research-based papers on safety issues. Awards are given to outstanding high school students from around Indonesia.
In the community development area the company organizes skill training programmes for disadvantaged youths who receive computer and basic mechanical training at the Astra Honda Training Centre.
Indonesia: PT Honda Prospect Motor
Honda's joint-venture automobile company in Indonesia donates engines, transmissions, tools and teaching manuals to technical schools to promote interest in automotive engineering. The company also organizes visits by university students to its manufacturing facilities. To date 30 schools have received donations
Malaysia: Honda Dreams Fund
Initiated in 2006 in collaboration with the United Nation,

provides underprivileged youth with full scholarships
to pursue higher education at any local public school
as well as private colleges and universities.

Pakistan: Promoting technical education
Honda Atlas Cars (Pakistan) Limited has donated a used Honda Civic with VTEC engine to the Nation Institute of Science Technical Education which trains teachers for local technical institutes.
The Philippines: Support on manpower development
Honda Cars Philippines, Inc donated engines and automatic transmission assemblies to six technological colleges, which include Laguna State Polytechnic College and Southern Luzon Polytechnic College, to provide students in the provinces opportunities for deeper understanding of automotive technology. Instructors were trained at the company's Training Center to equip them with appropriate training modules and skills.
The Philippines: Youth development
Honda Philippines, lnc. Supports a Motorcycle Mechanics Training Course at Tuloy Don Bosco Foundation, Inc. and TESDA (Technical Education and Skills Development Authority), by donating not only the training module but also motorcycles and tools. The company also provides on-the-job training for disadvantaged youths who, after graduation, have a good chance of being employed by Honda's motorcycle dealers.
To compensate for lost time in regular schools, the Company also donated to a drug rehabilitation center, a TV set, DVD player, and DVDs on Science, Math, History and Values, with an educational TV package, an innovative educational reform utilizing multimedia assisted instructional learning for street children.
Thailand: Region's first automotive institute
In 1999 Honda donated US$2.5 million in funds, land and equipment to help launch the Automotive Industry Technical College in Thailand, the first specialist automotive training institute in Southeast Asia, which aims to produce highly skilled human resources for Thailand's dynamic automotive industry.
Thailand: A.P.Honda's strong support for education
For many years A.P.Honda Co., Ltd., the distributor of Honda motorcycles in Thailand, and its nationwide network of dealers, have had a strong focus on extending educational support of various kinds to children and institutions throughout the country.
Since 2002 the Company and its dealer partners have donated about US$7.8 million for various projects. These include construction and maintenance for school buildings, scholarships for needy children, donations of educational materials, computers sports equipment and musical instruments and donations of motorcycle engines to vocational colleges.
Thailand: 31 legs united
In 2005 the Honda Group of Companies in Thailand introduced a new sport to Thai students – 31 legs racing. Similar to 3-legged racing but involving teams of 30 children racing against the clock over 50 metres, 31 legs racing immediately proved very popular with students, teachers and parents. It develops a sense of teamwork among the participants and helps to instill a challenging spirit. Working with government education and sporting authorities almost 10,000 students and supporters participated in the second 2006/7 race and even more are expected to join in the third 2007/8 race. Thailand: Honda ASIMO Super Idea Contest
Introduced in 2005 by the Honda Group of Companies in Thailand, the Honda ASIMO Super Idea Contest encourages young Thai primary school students to turn their dream ideas into reality. Nearly 22,000 applications were received in 2006 and over 33,000 in 2007.
The winners receive H.R.H Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn's trophies, scholarships, and a study trip to Japan to visit ASIMO's home town and appear on stage with the winners of the Honda Super Idea Contest in Japan. For more information, please go to www.honda-ideacontest.com
Thailand: ASIMO promotes science learning
For the last three years, Honda's ASIMO, the world's first true humanoid robot, has been touring all of Thailand's major regions with its team of Thai operators to encourage young people to take a greater interest in learning about science and technology.

Vietnam: 2nd year of YES Awards
In partnership with Vietnam's National Institute for Science and Technology Policy and Strategy, the four top technology universities and the Honda Foundation, in 2007 Honda Vietnam organized its second Honda Young Engineer and Scientist's Award (YES Award) to recognize outstanding students who will become leaders in science and technology.
